Presenting For It Trainers

Presenting For It Trainers

I often see 30 minute presentations from IT Trainers looking for full time and contract work. Before the presentation I always conduct a technical interview. I always start questions with their strongest subject

One candidate will claim Excel up to VBA Visual Basic Application which suggests the ability to program in Excel when in really they can barely automatic a simple sequence of steps. If a candidate is asked how they would create a macro to run when a file opens but cannot describe the process alarm bells should start ringing. A mixture of conceptual and practical questions should quickly determine the level of the candidate in a range of applications.

A candidate claiming to teach Microsoft Project should be able to answer a question regarding critical Path analysis but when asked says that they often only used Project at college for working as an Intern and they havent looked at it for a while.

I recently had a call from a candidate who wanted to be a freelance trainer. I gave them some advice about steps to take. A week later I got a call from an agency that supplies freelancers.nbsp; They followed this up by emailing through details of a trainer for a Web design course.nbsp; All the details had been inflated to such an extent it was no longer the same candidate.

Assuming a candidate makes it to interview they will normally expect to be asked to present on an application of their choice for half an hour. Assessors often look for the candidate to
middot; Check all computers are working on have the application and launch okay.
middot; Check all toolbars are the same.
middot; Check all exercises if required are loaded on the machines.
middot; Have all if any photocopied handouts ready.
middot; Write their name date and course title on the board If supplied.
nbsp; Write the course topics on the board.

Once the candidates assessors have arrived. you might be expected to
middot; Introduce yourself the course and explain the fire exits toilets coffee and ask them to sign in if relevant.
middot; Tell them a bit about yourself your background and knowledge.
middot; Explain the timing of breaks and estimated time of course completion.
middot; Ask the candidates to introduce themselves assess their level of knowledge and ask them what they hope to achieve from the day.
middot; As a trainer expect to be asked questions. If you rename a sheet tab in Excel expect to be asked what the maximum number of characters available for a sheet tab 30 if you are curious. The idea of the questioning should being to stretch the trainer and see how they cope with questions and keep the course on track.

After the presentation assessors often look out for the trainer naturally cleaning down their board and clearing the relevant/amended files you have used from each PC.
middot;Check all PCs are shut down properly and switched off. The trainer should make sure the room is left clean and tidy as you would like to find it next morning.

As a trainer remember that the assessor is looking for good structure in your presentation and the ability to answer relevant questions within the context of the sessions objectives. Dont be surprised if you are asked to present without a projector in an effort to see how you respond to limited resources at a venue. All these qualities need to be exhibited at the same time as you are being assessed for clarity of voice eye contact and all the usual interpersonal skills.
